China has three types of phone numbers, local numbers, toll-free numbers and shared cost numbers. Amazon Chime provides flexibility for attendees by supporting each type. It is important to understand some of the nuances and conventions that are present when people in China dial into these types of numbers (note that this is not an issue that is specific to Amazon Chime).
Local numbers: These are regular numbers assigned by city code and should be able to be dialed from any phone (mobile or landline). Calling these numbers is free for callers from within each of the three cities, but long distance rates apply when calling from areas outside these cities.
Amazon Chime has several local numbers provided for China:
China (1): +86 10 8783 3459 (Beijing)
China (2): +86 21 8036 9416 (Shanghai)
China (3): +86 755 6181 1923 (Shenzhen)
Tips for dialing local numbers
Meeting attendees should use the closest city as long distance rates may apply to callers from outside each area.
If attendees are calling from within China do not include the country code (+86).
When dialing from one of the local number cities supported, do not include the area code.
Beijing's area code is 10. Dial 8783 3459 when calling from Beijing. If based in another city and calling from a mobile phone, dial 0 10 8783 3459
Shanghai's area code is 21. Dial 8036 9416 when calling from Shanghai. If based in another city and calling from a mobile phone, dial 0 21 8036 9416
Shenzhen's area code is 755. Dial 6181 1923 when calling from Shenzhen. If based in another city and calling from a mobile phone, dial 0 755 6181 1923
Toll free numbers:
Toll free numbers are free to the calling party.
However, they are only available from landlines. Mobile subscribers are unable to call them.
Amazon Chime provides two toll free numbers for China:
China Toll-Free (1): +86 10800 440 0806 (China Telecom)
China Toll-Free (2): +86 10800 744 0736 (China Unicom)
Each of these can only be called by subscribers from the same service provider. If a busy signal is being received, the attendee should attempt to use the other toll free number.
Shared cost numbers:
Shared cost numbers, also referred to as "400 numbers," are generally available for both landlines and mobile phones.
However, there is a charge per minute shared by the calling party and the host.
This can be substantial and can vary based on the subscriber plan and the mobile service provider. Attendees should verify the pricing with their service provider before making extensive use of these numbers.
Amazon Chime provides a shared cost number for China:
China Shared Cost: +86 400 600 3731
